On the Second Day of Christmas, TanisKnits Gave to Me…

Congratulations to winner, Evette, who had the answer of the Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

———————–day2

How does it work? I’ll ask a random trivia question each day for the next 12 days. Leave your answer in the comments section (and be sure to subscribe to my blog so your email address shows up and I can contact you) and a winner will be randomly chosen each day. Some of the prizes are digital this year, so readers from around the globe can participate, but be sure to check after each question if it is open to US or international readers only. The winner and answer will be posted on the original post the following day and will be contacted via email. Interweave is generously sponsoring prizes this year, so sit back, answer some trivia and win some great prizes!

Today’s trivia question: What was the first novel ever written on a typewriter?

Today’s winner will receive a free copy of my book, Knitting Architecture, open to US residents only.

  11. There is disagreement whether it was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer or Life on the Mississippi, both by Samuel Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain).

Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, although there is some dispute that it may have been Life on the Mississippi. Either way, it seems safe to say that the first novel ever written on a typewriter was by Mark Twain.

It was Life on the Mississippi – unless one considers it a memoir and not a novel. In that case, the answer would be Tom Sawyer.

Is this a trick question? 🙂 The first book which we have proof was typewritten when submitted to the publisher was Mark Twain’s “Life on the Mississippi”. Now, Mark Twain, in his autobiography, declared “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” was the first novel written on a typewriter.

Definitely Mark Twain, but the jury still seems to be out on whether the first book he wrote on it was -The Adventures of Tom Sawyer- or -Life on the Mississippi.- I’m enjoying this trivia! :). –Bookaholic13 on Ravelry

Oh, this is a tricky question. Although Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) wrote the first book known to be written on a typewriter and had stated in writing that that book was “The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer “, many historians believe that he was mistaken and that “Life On The Mississippi” (not a novel) is really the first to be typed and submitted to the publisher as a typed manuscript. The majority of “The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer “was submitted as a hand written manuscript. Clemens was said to have started it on the typewriter but out of frustration with his typing skills, and the cussing it made him do, he finished most of it by hand.
All that being said, looks like it is still “The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer”

Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was the first book written on a typewriter, or so says the internet, the purveyor of all information today. 🙂
