    1977! I remember it well, I was a tenth grader growing up in a WV town just an hour from the bridge. My fear of bridges was firmly cemented when my father drove us across and stopped in the center to make us get out and look over the side!!! Those base jumpers who plunge off are CRAZY!

    Per the National Park Service website, the bridge was completed October 22, 1977. Neither there nor on the Wikipedia page does it specify that it was opened on that date, but since the annual festival usually occurs on the third Saturday of October, it probably was then or within a few days of that.
